Magic City Classic 2026: A Birmingham Local’s Game Day Guide
Birmingham, AL · The Local Guide
At 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, the drumlines start rolling through downtown Birmingham, AL, and for the rest of the day the city belongs to two HBCUs and about 60,000 of their closest friends.
That's the Magic City Classic, and Magic City Classic 2026 lands on Halloween, exactly 102 years after Alabama State and Alabama A&M first met on October 31, 1924. It's billed as the 85th edition, and the event's own site calls it the largest HBCU event in the country. We've pulled the verified times, prices and parking rules so you can plan the whole day, plus a few downtown stops that make a full weekend of it.
01 — MorningThe 8 a.m. parade
Most people think of this as a football game. Locals know the day really starts a few hours earlier, on the streets, with marching bands and dance teams from both schools plus community groups. It's free, and it runs rain or shine.
Magic City Classic Parade
The parade steps off at 18th Street North and 7th Avenue North, and this year's presenting sponsor is Disney on the Yard. Entry registration for floats and groups has already closed. If you can't make it downtown, WBRC 6 News broadcasts it live, but only on TV; there's no stream.
02 — PregameTailgating at Legion Field
By late morning the action shifts west. The Coors Light Pregame Tailgate Party, presented by Coca-Cola, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the West Side Parking Lot at Legion Field, which gives you two and a half hours of music and food before the game starts.
Private Tailgate Spaces
Legion Field sells and manages every tailgate space. Online spaces went live September 10 at a limit of two per order, and the official page lists leftover on-site spaces at $500 to $600 on October 26 and 27, so call (205) 254-2391 to see what's left. Tents and RVs have to fit that 20-by-40 footprint, tent stakes aren't allowed, and spaces can't be saved or roped off. Anyone who leaves the lot needs to be back by 8 a.m. on game day.
03 — The GameKickoff at the Gray Lady
Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. at Legion Field, 400 Graymont Avenue West. Tickets start at $27 through Tixr, linked from magiccityclassic.com, and the ticket office takes calls at 877-332-7804. Game-day stadium parking is listed at $50, though the site says more details are coming, so check the parking and shuttle page again the week of the game.
Alabama State vs. Alabama A&M
Alabama State took last year's game 56–13, its fourth win in a row, but Alabama A&M still leads the all-time series 44–43–3. The Classic has been played at Legion Field since 1940 and hasn't missed a year since 1945. The stadium, nicknamed the Old Gray Lady, opened November 19, 1927, as a war memorial, and it held the Iron Bowl from 1948 to 1988 and hosted Olympic soccer in 1996.
“Nobody leaves at halftime on Classic Saturday. That's when the second game starts.”
04 — HalftimeBattle of the Bands
The football is real, but plenty of the 60,000 or so people in the stands are there for halftime. Alabama A&M's Marching Maroon and White takes the field against Alabama State's Mighty Marching Hornets, and each band gets its turn to answer the other. The game's own site credits the weekend with a nearly $25 million economic impact and says it draws close to 200,000 participants across all the events.
05 — Before the WeekendDowntown Birmingham stops
If you're coming in from Huntsville, Montgomery or farther, give yourself Friday. These are the places we'd send out-of-town friends, with details we confirmed this week.
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
Last admission is at 4 p.m., and it's closed Sunday and Monday. College students, seniors and military pay $13 with ID, children pay $13 and third graders and younger get in free. Parking is free behind the building, entered from 15th Street North. A new exhibit, Historically Black, opens October 23 and runs through December 12.
Vulcan Park and Museum
The park grounds, museum and observation tower share the same hours, and Revolutionary Roots runs through January 10, 2027. Buy tickets online or at the booth, but note that cash isn't accepted.
Sloss Furnaces
The night before the game, Sloss hosts Molten + Mysterious, a ticketed evening listed at $90 on the Bham Now calendar. The site is free to enter during normal business hours and closed Mondays.
One more date worth knowing: on Saturday, October 24, McWane Science Center runs an adults-only, Taylor Swift-themed After Dark from 7 to 11 p.m. at 200 19th Street North. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door, and parking in the McWane deck is free while spots last.
06 — Where to EatDowntown fuel
- Downtown: The Pizitz at 120 19th Street North houses the Pizitz Food Hall and The Louis Bar, with an attached parking deck entered from 18th Street North. It's the easiest pre-parade breakfast or post-game regroup in the area.
- Near the museums: The Civil Rights Institute and McWane sit within a few blocks of the Pizitz, so a Friday museum day and a food hall lunch fit in one walk.
07 — The PlanClassic Saturday, mapped
Here's how we'd run October 31 if the goal is to see everything without rushing.

08 — Make It EffortlessLet us drive
A day that starts at 8 a.m. and ends after dark is a lot of parking math. Our 2026 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter seats up to 10, books self-drive or with a chauffeur, and keeps your group together between the parade, the tailgate and the stadium. See our game day packages or reserve your date before Halloween weekend fills.
