Things to Do in Hoover AL: A Local’s Fall 2026 Guide
Birmingham, AL · The Local Guide
On a Thursday evening in October, Hoover, AL, trades its reputation for malls and ballfields for string lights, a six-acre lake and roughly forty kitchens pouring samples into one botanical garden.
That's the surprise of the best things to do in Hoover AL this fall: the city south of Birmingham is stacking its calendar with food, art and long afternoons outdoors, and a good chunk of it is free. Between a sell-out tasting on October 15 and a two-day art festival on November 7–8, there's a reason to head down I-65 nearly every weekend. We've pulled the verified details together, from ticket prices and hours to the parking quirks that trip people up.
01 — Thursday NightTaste of Hoover
If you only book one thing, make it this. The annual Taste of Hoover sets up inside Aldridge Gardens and turns the whole property into a walk-around tasting room, with live music and strings of ambient lighting overhead.
Taste of Hoover 2026
One ticket covers every food and drink vendor, about 40 in all. Confirmed names include Board in Birmingham, Grimaldi's Pizza, Tacos de Azul at Brock's Gap Brewing, SAW's BBQ, East 59 Cafe, Michelle's Chocolate Laboratory and Something Simple Coffee + Sips. Tickets are sold at aldridgegardens.com.
02 — Slow DownAldridge Gardens
On any other day, Aldridge is the easiest reset in the metro, because admission is free and the gates are open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. unless an event or weather says otherwise. The 30-acre garden is famous for its hydrangeas, though the real draws in October are the six-acre lake with walking paths, the Meyer Bonsai Terrace, which holds one of the finest bonsai collections in the Southeast, and a working apiary the gardeners call Apiopolis.
Aldridge Gardens
Rotating art exhibitions run through the on-site gallery, and the Hydrangea Society meets here on October 28. A members-only guided bird walk happens October 17 from 8 to 10 a.m., which is a fair reason to consider joining.
03 — Boots OnMoss Rock Preserve
Hoover's wild side is the roughly 350-acre Moss Rock Preserve, a boulder-strewn tract of waterfalls, streams and sandstone outcroppings that climbers and hikers treat as a neighborhood secret. Entry is free, and it's open during daylight hours every day of the year.
Boulder Field Trailhead
This is the easiest way in if you want the famous boulders, and there are two other access points: a gravel lot at 4600 Preserve Pkwy off Sulphur Springs Road, and the lower lot at Simmons Middle School, 1575 Patton Chapel Rd, which leads to the tougher trails. The paths are natural and unpaved, with rocks, roots and water-cut crevices, so strollers and mobility devices won't make it.
“Hoover isn't a detour from Birmingham. It's the part of the weekend you didn't know you were missing.”
04 — Mark the DateMoss Rock Festival
A month out, Hoover's biggest art weekend returns for its 21st year. The Moss Rock Festival is an eco-creative fair with more than 100 juried artists, makers and designers, plus tree-planting giveaways and organic vendors.
Moss Rock Festival 2026
The festival sets up at the Hoover Met Complex, and children 18 and under get in free. The beer garden is celebrating its 15th year with a commemorative 13-ounce Belgian glass, craft beer samples, wine, beer floats, snacks and football on the screens. Ticket prices were still listed as to be announced when we checked.

Not every plan needs a ticket. The Riverchase Galleria at 2000 Galleria Circle is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.–8 p.m., and Sunday noon–6 p.m., with Macy's, Belk, JCPenney and Von Maur as anchors and free parking throughout. It's a decent rainy-day fallback and a useful meeting point for a group.
For a more polished stay, the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa at 4000 Grand Ave has Brock's Restaurant, a family-friendly Clubhouse Restaurant open daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m., JT's Lounge and Cafe MacRae's for morning coffee. Brock's serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., which makes it the right place to end a Moss Rock weekend.
